KERONCONG

Keroncong is kind of music originated in Java Island Indonesia in year 1600’s.
Some people believe this music was influenced by Portuguese cultere. From Central Java Keroncong music was spread to the south east asia including Malaysia.

Kroncong has a deep root in Central Java , especially in Yogyakarta & Solo City (center of Java culture).
Keroncong and javanese Gamelan music almost have same rules and composistion.

Langgam jawa, is keroncong music which uses many of the patterns of gamelan along with the pelog scale. In this style there is a great amount of gamelan influence.
Keroncong orchestra music instrument originally consisted of sitar, rebab (bowed chordaphone), bamboo flute, gendang, kenong and saron and a gong.
Nowdays, these instruments are very often replaced by modern instrument among other the guitar, keyboard, violin, modern flute, cello (replace gamelan instruments) and the bass (substitutes the gong). Eventhough that instrument are replace by moderm instrument but the vocals still remain traditional which are based on the Javanese pelog or slendro scales.
The most populer Keroncong song is Bengawan Solo which compose by Gesang. Others popular kerongcong singer are Waljinah with her song " Walang Kekek", Mini Satria, Sundari Sukoco, Wiwiek Sumbogo, Mus Mulyadi etc.
Lokananta who is the is oldest music studio in Indonesia has a lot of Keroncong music collections.

Gamelan

A gamelan is a kind of tradisional musical ensemble of Indonesian. Featuring a variety of music instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, drums, and gongs, bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings, and vocalists may also be included. The term refers more to the set of instruments than the players of those instruments. A gamelan as a set of instruments is a distinct entity, built and tuned to stay together — instruments from different gamelan are not interchangeable.

"gamelan" comes from the Javanese language/word meaning to strike or hammer.
